Genre: Horror

Horror is a genre that is filled with tons of opportunities to bring innovative new ideas to the table. The typical target audience are those aged 13 and older due to the frequent theme of gore and mention of disturbing subjects. Genre conventions are a huge part of horror and to make a film have a classic horror look. These include themes such as supernatural, death, and revenge. Mise en scene is also a huge part of creating a look to convey a certain idea. Horror tends to have more lowkey lighting and settings that allow a specific tone without it explicitly being stated. Color such as black and red are frequently used and non-diagetic sounds are often utilized. Institutional conventions are used to not only make the viewer aware of who made the film but provide insight.  These logos are often edited to appear more ominous than the typical logo of the studio.  This applies to marketing as well because the marking of a horror film would differ from the marketing of a kids movie.

Some samples of horror movies include:
Halloween (1978) R
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) R
Rosemary’s Baby (1968) R
The Cabin in The Woods (2011) R
Saw (2004) NC-17
Insidious (2010) PG-13
